Italian Dog Breeds

Italy is famous for various groups of wonderful dog breeds such as shepherd dogs, pointers, and molossers and so on. Most of these Italian dog breeds originated in specific area or region of Italy and the name of the breeds originated from the name or symbol of that specific area. For instance, the breed belongs to Naples named as Neapolitan Mastiff.

In some cases, if it is not originated in particular area but if it becomes popular in some area or town, the breeds can be named by the area where they become popular. As an example, the popular breed named Bolognese is referring to the city of Bologna and similar to that the breed named Bergamasco refers to the area Bergamo. Its exact origin is not clear. Since it becomes popular in Bergamo area in the North of Italy, it got that name.

Rest other Italian dog breeds do not belong to any specific area in Italy so some breeds include the adjective “Italian” along with their breed name. Spinone Italiano is the best example for this type. At the same time the dog breed that belongs to the island of Corsica does not refer to its breed and is named as Cane Corso.

Let’s have a brief look on these recognized Italian dog breeds in coming paragraphs. The recognized breeds are:
Pastore Bergamasco or Bergamese is a breed of dog and it is originated in the Italian Alps. Originally it is used as a herding dog and it is normal and healthy characteristic of the breed. This type of Italian breed has unusual matted coat, which is the most distinctive feature among all the other.

Bolognese or Bichon Bolognese or Bologneser is typically small in size and it has white cottony coat.

Braco Italiano or Italian Pointer is type of gun dog and they are obedient, tranquil and loyal. Italian Pointers are of two types they are – hound like type and heavier type and it usually come in brown and white in color. They are pointer like type with lighter body.

Cane Corsa is an Italian molosser breed and usually this type of dogs are decided as guard dogs.

Maltese becomes show dogs these days but before it was used to chase rats. It is not sure that whether it is named after the island of Malta or the Sicilian town of Melita. No matter which origin it belongs to, now it is consider as an Italian breed.

Meremma Sheepdog is divided in to two types and they are – THE Abruzzese that belong to Abruzzi and The Maremmano, which belongs to Meremma Plains.

Other recognized dogs are Segugio Italiano, Volpino Italiano and so on.
Some of the unrecognized dog breeds of Italy are Abruzese Mastiff, Alp Mastiff, Bucciriscu Calabrese, Sicilian Branchiero, Lottatore Brindisino and Cane di Mannera.
