Non Allergic Dog Breeds

Many people would love to have a canine companion at home but are unable to do so due to the fear that they may develop allergic reactions to dog fur. Parents with little children at home or those having a pre existing medical condition such as asthma or wheezing are particularly concerned. Such people can consider getting a hypoallergenic or non allergic dog breeds. While you may not get a 100% non allergic dog, there are certain breeds that are known to create lesser problems for people with severe allergies.

Here is a listing of relatively non allergic dog breeds that make your home a livelier place to live in and provide you with the love and companionship that you may yearn for.

Poodle
Poodles are a good choice for people suffering from a lot of allergens. The poodle is compact in size and sheds almost no hair at all and is a preferred choice for many allergy sufferers compared to other non allergic dogs due its intelligence and genial nature. They are very easy to train and very smart. Since they have been bred as swimmers, they like being constantly washed and cleaned. Though they require constant grooming, you may not encounter many problems when doing so.

Basenji
The basenji belongs to the group of non allergic dog breeds and is another excellent choice for those suffering from allergies. A rare feature of the basenji is that it washes itself like a cat. It licks itself clean but does not have any particular doggie smell and hence it is highly convenient as very little grooming is required. It also does not shed hair which is a major cause of allergies and therefore is a very ideal choice for people suffering from pet dander allergies.

American hairless terrier
It has been discovered that the American hairless terrier is the best choice for those people who cannot tolerate any other hypoallergenic dog. As they have practically no hair, they are less likely to gather dust and other particles of dirt that could be allergic for most people. Studies have shown that people who have been allergic to dogs all their life are overwhelmed when owning an American terrier for the first time. They become emotional and cry when they are able to touch a dog for the first time without developing an allergic reaction.

Shih-Tzu
As long as the Shih –Tzu is well groomed, a person with allergies won’t suffer much. This breed of dog is clever, playful and is a happy double coated dog that guards the house well as well as makes for a loving companion. It sheds very little dander and is used to being constantly cleaned and washed.

Grey hounds, Kerry blue terrier, Italian greyhounds are also belong to the category of non allergic dog breeds since they have single coats of short hair. So allergy sufferers need not be deprived of the love and companionship of a loving dog by owning a non allergic dog breed.
